Building Efficiency

Date:2010/12/28 From: AetClose

Buildings consume energy to provide lighting, heating, cooling, ventilation and power to the various work processes within the building. Systems are designed to meet the peak cooling and peak heating requirement often this results on overdesign which is inherited by the building owner or tenant. Systems are often installed badly and not commissioned correctly. The result of this overdesign, badly installed and un-commissioned systems is that the buildings operational staff is assigned to sort out the problems.

With more thought at the design stage new buildings can achieve excellent efficiency levels and at the same time improve the conditions inside the building. Often this can lead to a reduction in equipment size and installation costs leading to a more cost effective design. Proper commissioning of a new building is essential to ensure the building will continue to perform to the standards to which it was designed.

For existing buildings there are enormous opportunities for energy saving for these buildings often suffer from poor design and outdated maintenance practices. For this type of building savings in excess of 30% are typically available for a building under an operations and maintenance survey scheme.
